This Never Happens

Something happened today that used to be extremely unusual.

So, I guess I have to set the whole scene for you for some context.

It’s September 2020 as I’m writing this. Way back in 2020 PP (pre-pandemic) we decided to have our front and back doors replaced. They were reaching eyesore status levels of old and not working well either.

For a long time we couldn’t have them installed because, Covid.

Then when we could finally have people come to the house to install them, one of the doors, the front door, was missing.

Finally, a couple of days ago the missing door was located and we were good to go.

So we played phone tag with the installation guys for a couple of days trying to schedule them to come to the house.

And then guess what happened?

They just SHOWED UP today.

THE HORROR! At 8:30am, the installation guys showed up at the door to install the doors.

I was mortified. The HOUSE! It’s a disas…

Wait.

The house wasn’t a disaster. I had emptied the dishwasher while my coffee was brewing.

There was a handful of stuff that needed to be picked up.

But, um, for the most part, the house was clean and tidy. Not a disaster.

Nothing to be embarrassed about.

I, on the other hand, hadn’t brushed my teeth yet so we do have some things to work on of course, still, but the house was… I mean it was fine.

I’ve been following my routines. Not perfectly, but for the most part, I’ve been getting 3 out of 4 of the 15 minutes done every day and I filled in on Saturday whatever I had missed for the week.

So today, when we had surprise visitors, we were good.

I didn’t have to scramble to clean the toilet or really anything. I picked a couple of glasses left on the living room table and a few other random things in the kitchen and the house was...fine.

It wasn’t always like that. There was a time when I would have been mortified to have someone randomly show up to the mess of a house. I might have even said, sorry, we didn’t know you were coming. Not today!

And then we’d have to reschedule. And I would have to spend hours cleaning whenever we did reschedule for them to come back.

It’s just not a fun way to live life. Especially when just simple routines that you barely even notice yourself doing are all you really need to keep things fine.
